A tandem paragliding flight, with a school based in Dieulefit

Tandem flights from April to September, taking off at Vesc or the Col du Devès. The same rising air the valley's vultures use.

The landscape of the Drôme provençale — south-facing limestone ridges, valleys running north to south, clear sunshine — produces regular, readable thermals. That is what keeps the vultures of Rémuzat turning, and it is what keeps the paragliders flying.

One useful point before you call: there is no take-off site at Dieulefit itself. The school is based there, but the flights leave from sites around the area, mainly Vesc and the Col du Devès, at Roynac.

Everything you can do, and what you cannot

The closest

Dynamic Parapente, Dieulefit

The school closest to the farm, 19 minutes away by road. 06 03 99 00 10.

It offers tandem flights: a short discovery flight, and a longer option. Open 1 April to 30 September.

Take-off sites: Vesc and the Col du Devès at Roynac, in the Drôme, as well as Chabanet near Privas in the Ardèche.

Facing the Ventoux

Over towards Nyons

Baronnies Parapente, around Nyons and Sainte-Jalle, offers tandem flights facing the Ventoux.

An alternative if the Dieulefit slots are full, or if you would rather fly over the Eygues valley.

Multi-activity

Buis-les-Baronnies

Baronnies Ventoux Aventures, at Buis-les-Baronnies, offers tandem paragliding alongside climbing, via ferrata and canyoning.

Useful if you want to combine several guided activities on the same day.

The Rouvier site, above Béconne

You sometimes hear of a take-off site at the place known as Rouvier, above Béconne. There is no organised structure there, no marking and no rescue cover. It is not a site for a first flight.

If you are a qualified pilot, ask a local club about access conditions and local practice before taking off there.

Why fly here rather than elsewhere

The terrain is readable. Clean ridges, clear south faces, few confusing features: the conditions are quick to understand, which is comfortable for a tandem flight as much as for a pilot new to the area.

The view is the real argument. From the local sites you have the Vercors on one side, the Ventoux on the other, and below you the cultivated valleys of the Drôme provençale. In June and early July the lavandin fields draw purple bands you can see from above — that is the flowering period.

And you are sleeping twenty minutes away. That is what makes it possible to try a flight in the morning, accept a postponement to late afternoon if the air is not right, and avoid turning a first flight into an expedition.

Advice and local resources

Call the day before, not on the morning itself. Slots fill up in July and August, and the instructors choose the take-off site according to the wind on the day: you will find out late where to go, but you need to have booked early.

Accept a postponement. A flight cancelled because of the air is not bad service, it is the opposite. Plan the flight for the start of your stay rather than the day before you leave, so you keep a fallback slot.

Dress warmer than you think you need to. Even in July it is cool a few hundred metres above the ground. Closed shoes with ankle support, sunglasses, and nothing in your pockets.

What the flight does not include

The prices advertised by the schools vary with the length of the flight and the photo or video option. Confirm when you book what is included, the maximum weight accepted and the minimum age.

Transport to the take-off site is generally down to you, following the instructor: bring your car.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you go paragliding near the cottage?
The nearest school is Dynamic Parapente, at Dieulefit, 19 minutes from the farm by road, on 06 03 99 00 10. It offers tandem flights from 1 April to 30 September. Take-offs are at Vesc and the Col du Devès, at Roynac, not at Dieulefit itself.
Can you learn to fly here?
The nearest school offers tandem flights with an instructor, not pilot training. For a progression course, ask the outfits at Nyons, Sainte-Jalle or Buis-les-Baronnies.
When is the flying season?
1 April to 30 September for the nearest school. The best times of day are the morning and the late afternoon; the middle of the day is often too turbulent in summer.
Do you need to book in advance?
Yes, especially in July and August. Call at least the day before. Plan the flight for the start of your stay: a weather postponement is frequent and normal, and that way you keep a fallback slot.
Can you take off from the cottage's own commune?
People sometimes mention a site at the place known as Rouvier, above Béconne, but there is no organised structure there, no marking and no rescue cover. It is not a site for a first flight: go through a school.
