The Drôme provençale and the Montagne de la Lance seen from Ferme Le Grand Ubac

Home  /  The area

The Drôme provençale begins at the farm gate

The footpaths start here, the lavandin grows on the farm's own land, and the Montagne de la Lance towers over the commune. Everything else is within forty-five minutes.

You are at Roche-Saint-Secret-Béconne, 500 metres above sea level, on the shaded slope — the ubac, which gave the farm its name, with no effect on the sunshine throughout the cottages' opening season. The Montagne de la Lance towers over the commune. The lavandin fields are on the farm's own land.

And everything else lies within a forty-five-minute drive.

Five ways to spend the week

These five detailed guides are only available in French for now.

A stall at the Provençal market in Dieulefit on a Friday morning

Every day except Monday

The markets, day by day

Eleven markets within fifty minutes. Taulignan on Friday, 13 minutes away, Grignan on Tuesday, Nyons on Thursday. With the days, the times and the designations worth knowing.

1,338 metres

The Montagne de la Lance

The ridge borders the farm's own commune. Two routes, the height gain, what the waymarking is really like, and easy walks for anyone who does not want a full day of climbing.

Rows of lavandin in flower in the Drôme provençale

Mid-June to mid-July

The lavender fields

They are on the farm's own land: you step outside and you are there. When the flowering comes, why it is lavandin and not fine lavender, and what time of day to photograph it.

Seven villages

Villages & châteaux

Grignan and Madame de Sévigné, the potters of Dieulefit, the olive oil of Nyons, Le Poët-Laval listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, Taulignan and its ramparts, the Enclave des Papes.

Black truffles at the Richerenches market, the largest truffle market in Europe

October to April

Autumn & winter

The largest truffle market in Europe on Saturdays, the truffle mass in January, the olive harvest, almond trees in blossom in March. And nobody about.

Sport, swimming, cycling

IGN maps are provided in both cottages, and the footpaths start at the gate.

  • River swimming the Lez, down in the valley
  • Climbing Rocher des Aures, for independent climbers
  • Hiking GR9 along the Lance ridge
  • Cycling waymarked routes in the Baronnies
  • Horse riding La Bâtie-Rolland, on the D540, 1 hour to a full day
  • Canoeing the Drôme, the Ardèche gorges
  • Treetop adventure Marsanne

And for anyone arriving with a dog: pets are welcome, and the farm has its own animals — about thirty Rove goats, three donkeys and horses.
